A third-party accessory company has claimed the port tucked away behind the Apple Watch strap can be used to charge the device.
Reserve Strap says it has been able to “independently confirm the six-pin diagnostic port underneath the Apple Watch case can be used for charging.”
As such the company is planning to launch a battery strap that would allow users to charge their device on the go.
This, of course, would enable Watch-wearers to extend the time between needing to to dock with the wireless charging station in order to replenish the cell. Reserve Strap even says its battery strap will charge the Apple Watch faster than the inductive solution.

Apple has not acknowledged the diagnostic port at any time in its official documentation and the port itself is covered by a door that looks similar to the SIM-tray on an iPhone. The company likely uses the port internally, as the name suggests, for diagnostic reasons.

If Apple hasn’t enabled the port for third-party use, and isn’t attempting to take advantage of it with its own accessories, it seems unlikely it’ll tolerate companies like Reserve Strap attempting to utilise it.
The manufacturer is taking pre-orders and is promising to deliver the straps this autumn, so we’ll see.
