Here’s how you can finally apply to be verified on Twitter

The process behind Twitter verification and the accompanying blue tick has always been a little like the Queen’s Honours Lists – many aren’t sure about how you get one one.

Now the micro-blogging service has created an online application process, which allows the vast army of Twitter users to put their case forward to the folks in charge of dishing out the ticks.

Twitter’s Tina Bhatnagar, in a blog post, says: “Our goal with this update is to help more people find great, high-quality accounts to follow, and for creators and influencers – no matter where they are in the world – to easily connect with a broader audience.”

However, this doesn’t mean it’s a free-for-all, where every man and his dog will be able to rock the blue ticks.

Bhatnagar says that those granted the elite status will still need to be figures of public interest.

The usual array of journalists, TV film and music stars as well as athletes, religious figures and those in the world of fashion will still get the nod over members of the public.

The company says accounts will need tweets set as public, a profile pic, a header, a bio, a verified phone number and email address, a website and a birthday to stand a chance.

Real names or stage names are recommended, while photos should be of the person or reflect the branding. Users are invited to tell Twitter why the account should be verified and can include URLs as evidence.

Twitter points out that the first accounts to be verified were Neil Armstrong, Kim Kardashian, Opta and Tony Hawk.
