hdmyboy is a 1080p HD upgrade for your Game Boy

Still love playing Tetris or Super Mario Land, but struggle to see what’s going on on your creaking old Game Boy screen? Help is at hand.

hdmyboy is a Kickstarter project that gives your Game Boy an HDMI output, so you can play games on your TV in beautiful 1080p HD. It also has its own replica NES controller.

It’s the brainchild of two Dutch brothers named Zane Amiralis and Joshua de Haan. The hdmyboy is an upgrade module that you install into your Game Boy, so you’ll need to be pretty handy with a screwdriver. It bulks out your Game Boy quite a bit too, so don’t expect to fit it in your pocket afterwards.

It upscales the graphics to 1080p HD. Seeing as they weren’t made with that resolution in mind, they’re not going to look as good as proper 1080p graphics. But from the demo video, they do look clearer and a lot less blurry than on the original handheld.

You can play in standard mode, or stretch it to fit a widescreen display (which makes everything look a lot fatter). You can also choose from different colour palettes, instead of the Game Boy’s four shades of green.

If that’s not enough retro gaming goodness, another Kickstarter project has launched aiming to fix your NES console. Called Blinking Light Win, you install it inside your console, and it promises to reduce wear and tear on your cartridges, extending their life. We can’t help but think it’s 30 years too late.
