HannsG Launches £105 22in WSXGA+ LCD

Form factor hits a new price low.

This could be music to your economically damaged ears (that metaphor ”really” doesn’t work does it? Ho hum.)…

Using its monstrous panel manufacturing facilities, Taiwanese components giant HannsG has leveraged its own scale to bring us a 22in desktop monitor for just £104.99 including VAT. Nice, but what are the compromises? Initially, I’d have to admit: not a lot.

Breaking things down, the ‘HG221AP’ hits all the right notes with a 1680 x 1050 (WSXGA+) native resolution, 5ms response time and typical 300cd/m2 brightness. Contrast ratio is rated at just 1000:1 but given the gross exaggerations often made around the industry with this ambiguous rating a true 1000:1 level would be perfectly fine.

Furthermore, horizontal and vertical viewing angles are perfectly acceptable at 170 degrees and 160 degrees respectively, the stand can even be ”both” pivoted and tilted (often a major flaw even on premium monitors) and there’s a pair of integrated stereo 1W speakers plus an anti-glare screen surface.

So where is the great big, hairy BUT in all this? There has to be one, right? And indeed there is and it comes in the most surprising of commodity areas too: connectivity. For while the absence of HDMI is no great surprise (or, arguably, no great loss) HannsG has incomprehensibly omitted DVI too meaning age old VGA is your only source of input. Yes, surely many other more expensive features could’ve been dropped in its favour (1W speakers anyone?) but this is the route that has been chosen, so suck it up.

That said, for those still in wallet temptation land there is one final major plus in the form of a three year standard warranty while Misco has already hopped aboard to give the HG221AP an immediate UK release.

If you can (heavily) compromise on your connectivity, a £105 RRP is hard to argue with…
