Gordon comes away highly impressed.
On Friday last week LG decided to give UK journos a hands-on with its latest stylish-ous handset, so I decided to see if the company has another Chocolate on its hands…
After an hour shooting the breeze with LG and fiddling with the KE850, or ‘Prada Phone’ as I’m sure it will become known, I have to say yes. The reason: it’s a phone, it’s a phone, it’s a phone.
I say this because ever since pictures were leaked onto the web and even after its subsequent unveiling the device has been lauded as everything from a smartphone to an iPhone beater. Of course this is understandable – after all the the similarities (both in physicality and timing) between the KE850 and iPhone are obvious to all – but when in hand one thing becomes blatently apparent: it’s just a phone, a stylish, sexy, well thought out, well featured phone… but it is just a phone.
That means this is no portable office, there’s no 3G, no mass of onboard memory and no Qwerty thumb board. Instead what you have is easily the sexiest candy bar on the market and a successor to the Chocolate, not the HTC TyTN. At 98.8 x 54 x 12mm and just 85g it is slimmer than both the Chocolate and the Shine, a mere 2g heavier than the former and a massive 30g lighter than the latter.
It brings with it a wonderfully swanky touch screen interface (there’s a sliding unlock bar), stunning 320 x 480 pixel 3in display, 2MP camera, full screen landscape video playback, Bluetooth and a microSD slot (256MB card bundled). Furthermore, contrary to previous reports the KE850 won’t come with a premium price, it will be pushed to the contract mass market and is unlikely to cost more than £20 to £30 with a 200 cross network minutes per month deal.
LG confirmed to me the KE850 is coming to virtually every major network later this month and my advice would be if you want a handset to impress your mates then forget about the latest RAZR, ditch the Chocolate and even cast off the Samsung Ultra Editions because this is the handset to have…
