Halo franchise tops 46m unit sales ahead of Halo 4 release

Ahead of next week’s Halo 4 UK release date, publisher Microsoft has revealed that the Halo gaming franchise has topped a staggering 46 million unit sales to date.

With the first Halo title, Halo: Combat Evolved launching back in 2001, Microsoft has revealed that in the 11 years which have followed, the gaming franchise has neared in on 50 million sales, generating roughly $3 billion (£1.85bn) in the process.

With the upcoming Halo 4 release, the first core Halo title to not have been developed by series founder Bungie, expected to break franchise sales records, Microsoft will be hoping the upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 and Assassin’s Creed 3 rival will be able to topple the record breaking $200 million (£123.7m) revenue recorded by Halo Reach during its opening 24 hours on sale back in 2010.

Adding to its fleet of hugely impressive sounding figures, Microsoft has suggested that since the introduction of Xbox LIVE, the Halo franchise has recorded more than 5 billion hours of online gameplay time, a figure that equates to over 570,000 years.

Halo 4 Release Date
Despite its name, Halo 4 is set to become the sixth core title release in the Halo franchise following on from the 2001 released Halo: Combat Evolved, 2004’s Halo and the 2007 arrival of Halo 3. With the switch from the original Xbox to the current Xbox 360, Halo 3: ODST was released in 2009 before Halo Reach touched down in 2010.

Landing in the midst of a flurry of high profile gaming releases such as FIFA 13 and Hitman Absolution, as well as the arrival of a new console in the form of the Nintendo Wii U, next week’s November 6 Halo 4 UK release date is expected to once again be one of the biggest entertainment releases of the year.
