Halfbike II is a pedal-powered Segway

The Segway is getting on a bit now. And let’s be honest, it’s a bit enervating staying still all the time. The Halfbike II, however, gives you the same elevated riding position, but adds pedal power, so you can get fit while you travel.

It looks like a cross between a Segway and a Penny Farthing. The stand-up design doesn’t only look cool, it gives you more presence on the road, so you’re less likely to come a cropper. It also helps your balance – as you tilt, you turn the Halfbike II, so it’s a full body workout. Use it a while, and you’ll develop much better core strength.

It’s built for the city. It folds, so you can take it on the bus or train, stow it under your desk and fit it in the boot of your car.

Each is handmade, with an aluminium frame and components from reputed bicycle manufacturers (though the firm doesn’t disclose which).

It stands 110cm tall, and under half that when folded. The weight is 8.2kg, which is just over a stone. Fine for lugging onto public transport, but you won’t want to carry it long distances (not that you would need to). The shape of it could also make it cumbersome to carry.

But that’s a small negative. It looks like a lot of fun to ride. It’s soared past its $50,000 funding goal and will ship in September. Shell out $399 (£270) and it can be yours.
