Half Life 2: Episode One Preloads 1st May

Gravity Guns at the ready...

Truth be told for a technology journalist I’m not that much of a gamer. I used to be but games seem to have reached a plateau in recent years and I haven’t felt compelled to complete a title since Half Life 2. Good thing then that the much anticipated expansion to this very title is almost upon us.

A small post from developer Valve on its Steam website late on Friday afternoon let the cat out of the bag. It read:

”Meanwhile, here at Valve, we’re frantically trying to put the finishing touches on Episode One for preloading to begin May 1st. The past couple of days have been spent with the team adding commentary tracks. Hopefully it will be interesting for people to gain some insight into our development processes. It’s pretty hectic around the office, but it is always a lot of fun to be so close to shipping.”

When learning of the art/tomfoolery that is journalism one of the common practices is to ask a naively optimistic, wide eyed, poorly funded, badly dressed student to pick out the pertinent points in a piece of writing. Well, it doesn’t take many late nights, few early mornings, repeat viewing of Withnail & I and a healthy bond to an SU Bar to spot ‘May 1st’, ‘finishing touches’ and ‘so close to shipping’ featured here.

Of course, this being Valve ‘finishing touches’ could mean “We’ve only got the story to complete, levels to design and coding to start” but I’m tempted to believe the infamously slow software house this time around. Could we soon be back in the manly boots of the wonderfully Christian-named Gordon Freeman? Looks that way…
