Is there anything modders can't do?
When everyone got angry that Apple left so many basic features out of the otherwise rather fantastic iPhone, who knew they were so easily fixed?
Following hacks for unlocked iPhones which enable games (including LucasArts, NES and Playstation emulation), MMS messaging, Navizon GPS, SMS mass mailing and individual deletions, amongst other things – now we get yet another big fish: video recording.
The clever chaps at Monster and Friends have made the breakthrough allowing 2MP video to be shot at 10fps for up to five seconds, though tweaks are expected to enable this to rise to 45 frames per second at lower resolutions with the length of recording only limited to the amount of storage available. The interface couldn’t be simpler either: following installation all a user does is touch the new video icon and recording begins, pressing the home button cancels it.
Gizmodo has a video of it up and running here.
So what does all this prove: clearly that either a) Apple had to curtail development to get the iPhone out on time or b) that it wanted to cynically drip feed new features onto the market to maintain a steady stream of sales. Amusingly, not as fast as the hackers.
Whatever the truth – and contrary to early protestations – the iPhone’s mobile Mac OS X platform is obviously highly pliable and I suspect there’s a lot more to come from it yet…
