The realisation that Grand Theft Auto III was first released a
decade ago will be a bit of a shock to many (including ourselves) but in a bid
to temper that shock, Rockstar Games announced the iconic title will
be available soon on “select” iOS and Android devices.
Going from the top-down view of previous titles in the
GTA series, the third installion made a huge leap forward with the 3D view and it’s vast and intricate
world of Liberty City to explore.
Playing as the main protagonist, Claude, you could traverse the virtual world doing pretty much anything you wanted including beating up prostitutes and
trying to complete ever more outrageous stunts on a motorbike.
Of course because the title requires pretty intensive
graphical processing, you won’t be able to play the mobile version with just any Android
or iOS handset. You’ll need a dual-core processor for starters, meaning the only
iOS devices compatible will be the iPad 2 and the iPhone 4S, which has only
gone on sale today.
Things are a little better in the Android camp with a few
more options including the Samsung Galaxy S II, the LG Optimus 2X, the Motorola
Atrix, as well as tablets such as the Acer Iconia, Asus Eee Pad Transformer,
Motorola Xoom and Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1.
A specific launch date has not been announced but Rockstar
Games says the game will be launching “later this autumn,” so you shouldn’t have
to wait too long before seeing Claude wandering around with a baseball bat in his hands on your mobile device.
As well as launching the new version of Grand Theft Auto
III, Rockstar Games has announced a limited-edition action figure of lead
character Claude which will come with a clothing range including his iconic
Liberty City Prison-issued jumpsuit. Nice.
