Yahoo has signed a deal to have Google provide it with some of its search results.
While Google and Yahoo used to vie for search engine supremacy in the early days of the internet, the scales have obviously tipped in Google’s favour since.
The figures aren’t looking too good in Yahoo’s latest financial results, with relatively meagre earnings of $76 million for the third quarter.
However, one interesting “business highlight” that Yahoo mentioned in its report is a fresh deal with former arch-nemesis Google.
Apparently, at some point in October, Google agreed to provide “additional flexibility to choose among suppliers of search results and ads.”
Under the terms of the new deal, Google will provide Yahoo with search results, images, and ads. It’s not clear how many of these Google will provide, but it is known that the deal will run until the end of 2018.

For Yahoo’s part a related SEC filing reveals that “Yahoo has discretion to select which search queries to send to Google and is not obligated to send any minimum number of search queries.”
Note that this deal will complement rather than replace the partnership Yahoo already has with Microsoft, which Yahoo is keen to mention remains a “strong partner.” In other words, Bing results will continue to be mixed into Yahoo’s services just as Google’s will now be.
