Google to announce Android M at Google I/O conference

As expected, Google will announce a brand new version of Android at the Google I/O conference taking place at the end of this month.

The web and mobile giant announced the schedule for the conference on Wednesday afternoon, with Android M explicitly mentioned in relation to an Android for Work session.

“Android M is bringing the power of Android to all kinds of workplaces. This opens huge new markets for hundreds of millions of devices to workers at small business, deskless workers, logistics and warehousing jobs; all be empowered by adoption of Android devices at Work,” the session synopsis read, as spotted by an Android Police reader.

The description has now been removed from the Google I/O website, but unfortunately no other details were revealed before Google pulled the listing.

With the vast majority of Android users yet to make it to Lollipop, the prospect of Android M may prove less exciting for some platform loyalists.

Yesterday, we brought news that 9 per cent of Android users have now graduated to Lollipop, following the launch of some new flagship devices like to the Samsung Galaxy S6 and HTC One M9.

Still, with less than one in ten users on the platform, almost a year after it was first announced, few Android users will be holding their breath for Android M.

The wishlist for Android M features includes the ability to use more gestures, send replies from notifications, switch to landscape home screens on phones, access a complete messaging centre and the return of the mute option.
