Google has started testing a same day delivery service called Google Shopping Express, according to recent reports.
The service would be a direct rival to the Amazon Prime service, according to TechCrunch. Google Shopping Express would be Google’s next major step in the online shopping field following Google Wallet and Google Shopping before it, and would present a unified shop front incorporating those two services.
It’s thought that established physical shops will be able to offer their wares through the service.
The initial American rollout would provide same-day deliveries from some major US retailers such as Walmart, Target, Walgreens and Safeway – although no specific partnerships have been mentioned by sources. It’s easy to see the likes of Tesco and Argos joining the scheme in this country.
Apparently, the service is being headed up by Tom Fallows, one of Google’s e-commerce product managers.
According to the report, Google Shopping Express will require an annual subscription of either $69 or $64, which works out at around £46 or £42 going by today’s exchange rate. It also works out at a good 10 to 15 dollars cheaper than Amazon Prime.
The report is unclear on when exactly Google Shopping Express will be shipping, but Google is apparently in the process of testing the service internally right now.
