Google’s new iOS app turns messy Live Photos into stable GIFs

Google has announced a new iOS-only app, that will help iPhone owners turn Live Photos into attractive GIFs and video clips.

The Motion Stills app from Google Research features the firm’s video stabilisation technology, which had previously been used to create animations from burst photos.

In this case of Live Photos, the tech will help to remove shakiness even if an iPhone user is taking photographs from a boat or driving on a bumpy road.

This is helpful, given the very nature of the Live Photos feature, which often captures the video when users are setting everything up for a still shot.

Google says the app can be used to create video loops, while it’ll also enable users to create video montages from their Live Photos. Everything can be easily shared on social media, Google says.

Live Photos were launched last year on the iPhone 6S range, as perhaps 2015’s headline upgrade alongside 3D Touch.

The feature automatically captures a couple of seconds of video either side of a photograph, enabling users to capture a moment beyond a single frame without any additional effort.

“With Motion Stills, we provide an immersive stream experience that makes your clips fun to watch and share,” Google writes on its Research blog.

“You can also tell stories of your adventures by combining multiple clips into a movie montage. All of this works right on your phone, no Internet connection needed.”

So today, Apple can thank Google for improving one of the iPhone 6S’ most talked about features.

iPhone 6S, 6S Plus and iPhone 5E users can download the app today.
