Google Play Music now allows music uploads in Chrome

Google has just enabled the ability to upload your music to Google Play Music directly through the Chrome browser.

Google Play Music has enabled you to upload your owned music to the cloud for a while now, essentially enabling you to access your entire record collection from any internet-connected device. Tracks that Google already has on its roster for streaming and purchasing purposes are simply matched.

Previously, you had to download a dedicated Music Manager app to handle your stored music and shift it to the cloud. Now, all you need to do is point your Chrome browser towards Google Play Music and drag and drop the tracks you want.

In order to enable the feature, simply head on over to the Google Play Music Lab and enable the feature.

Google has also added the ability for you to select a number of typical music folders from your PC (iTunes, Music etc.), and for Google Play Music to then monitor these folders for new additions. When new tracks appear, they’ll be uploaded (or matched) to Google’s servers automatically.

Just click on the new Add Music button at the top of the Google Play Music page to enable this feature.

In addition to these simplifications to the uploading process, Google has also added a new mini-player to Chrome. To activate it, simply click on the diagonal arrow at the bottom right of the Google Play Music page.

It’s also now possible to download tracks, albums, and playlist directly from the web.

The Google Music Manager always felt like a slightly odd, distinctly un-Google measure, so its obsolescence is a welcome turn of events.
