Google Play gift cards launched in the UK through Tesco and Morrisons

Celebrating the first birthday of the Google Play Store, the search and Android giant has confirmed that Google Play gift cards are now available in the UK.

Previously exclusive to US, Google has revealed that from today, March 6, Google Play gift cards will be available for purchase throughout the UK, with the supermarket chains Tesco and Morrisons the first to offer the digital purchase enabling gift cards.

Rolling out across the nation in the coming weeks, those looking to purchase the newly launched Google Play gift cards will be able to snap up the iTunes rivalling pre-paid cards in £10, £25 and £50 denominations.

With codes from Google Play gift cards able to be activated through Android smartphones and tablets, or directly on the Google Play website, Google has failed to confirm if it has plans to roll out the gift cards to further markets, stating simply: “Google Play gift cards are only available in the United States and United Kingdom at this time.”

Allowing users to download all manner of digital content from apps, ebooks, magazines, films and music, the Google Play gift cards cannot be used against purchases of other Google devices, such as the LG manufactured Google Nexus 4, nor can they be exchanged for cash.

Currently the only way to gift currency on through the Google Play store (digital gifting is not yet supported), a comment on the Google help pages stated: “You may only purchase Google Play credit to add to your own Google Play balance. At this time, aside from purchasing a physical Google Play gift card from a retail store, it is not possible to add credit to another user’s Google Play balance as a gift.”

Will Google Play gift cards be a new feature atop your birthday and Christmas wish lists or would you prefer digital currency transfers through the online outlet? Let us know via the TrustedReviews Twitter and Facebook feeds or through the comment boxes below.
