Google will close down its Google+ Photos service on 1 August , it’s been confirmed.
Towards the end of May, Google launched Google Photos. Here was a cloud-based photo-storage service that hoovered up your entire photo collection from disparate sources, and then intelligently organised them, all at no cost.
It may have escaped the attention of many that Google Photos was actually an advancement of an existing service called Google+ Photos.
As the name suggests, Google+ Photos is tied to Google’s largely unsuccessful social network, Google+. However, with Google Photos effectively spinning the service off into its own standalone product, there isn’t much need for a Google+ alternative.
As such, Google recently announced that it would be shutting down Google+ Photos on 1 August.
The closing down of the service will take place in stages, beginning with the Android version of Google+ Photos before continuing to the web and iOS.

As such, Google is prompting Google+ Photos users who haven’t already moved across to make the switch. The company has been offering prompts to upgrade to the new standalone Google Photos service, so now would be a good time to do so.
If you don’t want to continue with the new service, be aware that Google+ Photos will soon stop working for you. However, your pictures and videos will remain accessible here. If you want to be clear of Google altogether, you’ll also be able to export your images and videos through Google Takeout.
