Google Nexus 5 release date tipped as ‘end of October’

The Google Nexus 5 release date has been tipped for the ‘end of October’, with case manufacturer Spigen suggesting the phone will launch this month.

Phone cases built to fit the Google Nexus 4 follow-up have been posted on the Spigen site with the “end of October” listed as their available shipping date.

The cases, coming in black, gold, grey, white and transparent finishes, range in price from $24.99 to $29.99. Their design hints that the Google Nexus 5’s camera will have a large lens and be situated on the back of the device on the top left hand side.

Amazon also inadvertently hinted that the phone would be hitting stores very soon, posting an advert on its site for a Ringke Fusion shock absorbing case with a shipping date of October 30.

The new release-date hints comes after Google accidentally posted a listing for the phone on the Google Play Store with the tagline “Capture the everyday and the epic” last week.

The accidental leak confirmed the phone’s starting price. An entry-level 16GB model will cost $349 (£280), which is the same price as the equivalent Google Nexus 4 model when it launched a year ago.

It also appeared to show a few tweaks to Android 4.4 KitKat including greater level of translucency used on the home screen as well as  new phone and camera icons.

A video of a prototype of the Google Nexus 5 leaked earlier this month showing a pair of hands running through the Android 4.4 operating system.

The clip features an early model still using Key Lime Pie rather than the KitKat OS but it gives viewers a detailed look at the smartphone’s thin handset from all angles and views.

In the footage the Nexus 5 flaunts an oversized camera lens, base-mounted speakers and matt effect body as well as a standard 5-inch Full HD screen.

Manufactured by LG, recent rumours are reporting that it will come in a variety of colours – including white – and have a speedy 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor, 2GB of RAM, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC and 4G connectivity options.
