Google I/O Keynote: 900m Android device activations confirmed

Google has revealed that is has now activated more than 900 million Android devices globally, almost one per every seven people in the world.

Making the announcement during today’s Google I/O keynote in San Francisco California, the search turn hardware giant has revealed that it has more than doubled its Android activations in just 12 months, making the jump from 400 million devices in 2012 to 900 million in 2013.

“Two years ago we announced we had over 100 million activations of Android. Last year we announced with had 400 million Android activations. The momentum has been breathtaking since then,” Sundar Pichai, Google’s Android and Chrome head revealed.

Despite the staggering growth figures, Google has suggested that Android penetration is still below 10 per cent in a number of key markets around the world.

Having originated as a smartphone operating system, in recent times, Android has been pushed out across all manner of mobile technologies, with tablets, cameras and PMPs now all running the iOS, BlackBerry 10 and Windows Phone rival.

Since the advent of smartphone that has been an explosion of devices, smartphone and tablets and a variety of other devices,” Pichai said of the rapid rise of Android activations. He added: “We are in the middle of one of the most pivotal points in mobile computing.”

With Android firmly integrated as the world’s most popular mobile operating system despite having launched just five years ago, Pichai stated: “The world has changed very dramatically in the space of just six or seven years. It is now a multiscreen world.

“We at Google are incredibly excited. At the heart of this journey of personal computing is the impact we can have on people around the world.”
