Google Glass banned in UK cinemas

Google Glass has been banned in some UK cinemas following fears of piracy, just six days after it was released in this country.

It’s only bee six days since the Google Glass UK release date came around, but cinemas in the UK have been quick to ban the device in movie theatres.

Both Vue and the Cinema Exhibitors’ Association trade group have banned Google Glass in cinemas across the UK over privacy concerns.

This follows in the footsteps of several US cinema chains who banned the device in their premises when Glass was first launched over there.

Although this seems like a fairly sensible action, it might have just been easier to force users to turn t off rather than ban them altogether.

Currently, Google Glass can only record around 30 – 45 minutes of video on a single charge, so you’d never be able to record a whole feature-length movie on the head-worn gadget.

Also, Google has made sure that Glass emits a light while recording video, making sure that wearers can’t surreptitiously record subjects without their permission.  

Therefore any Google Glass wearer trying to record a movie in a dark cinema then would stick out like a rather large sore thumb.

This is also the comments echoed by Google itself, when asked for comment on the cinema ban.

“We recommend any cinemas concerned about Glass to treat the device as they treat similar devices like mobile phones: simply ask wearers to turn it off before the film starts,” said Google in a statement. “Broadly speaking, we also think it’s best to have direct and first-hand experience with Glass before creating policies around it.”

“The fact that Glass is worn above the eyes and the screen lights up whenever it is activated makes it a fairly lousy device for recording things secretly.”
