The Google Drive cloud storage locker suffered a service outage on Monday, leaving many users unable to access the files they had stashed online.
The problem, seemingly resolved as of home-time for most UK users on Monday, was widespread but not universal among all users according to various reports.
Google had admitted it was “investigating reports of an issue with Google Drive,” earlier on Monday, before troubleshooting the unidentified issue later in the day.
In a post on its status page at around 2pm, the company said: “We’re aware of a problem with Google Drive affecting a significant subset of users. The affected users are unable to access Google Drive. We will provide an update by 3/18/13 12:10 PM detailing when we expect to resolve the problem. Please note that this resolution time is an estimate and may change.”
A couple of hours later, at 4:35pm UK time, the online giant said the problem had been fixed, but didn’t offer any explanation for the service interruption, which will have made the working day much more difficult for many of its users.
Google has apologised for the outage, assured users that reliability of the service was its top priority and promised improvements were on the way to ensure there was no repeat performance.
“The problem with Google Drive should be resolved,” read an update. “We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience and continued support. Please rest assured that system reliability is a top priority at Google, and we are making continuous improvements to make our systems better. If you are still experiencing an issue, please contact us via the Google Help Center.”
