Google Chrome no longer works on macOS Mavericks and older versions

Google Chrome no longer works on computers still running macOS Mavericks, and earlier versions of the operating system.

If you try to open the browser, you’ll see the following message: “You can’t use this version of the application ‘Google Chrome’ with this version of OS X … The application requires OS X 10.10 or later”.

Indeed, Google’s Chrome Browser system requirements page has also been updated.

The change was first spotted by The Register, which notes that Google has been warning Mavericks users about the move for months.

Mavericks was released in 2013 − just after the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C came out − and has been succeeded by Yosemite, El Capitan, Sierra and High Sierra. Apple outed macOS 10.14 Mojave earlier this month, though it won’t be ready for the general public until around October.

Mavericks users, meanwhile, now have two options. They can either switch to Safari or Firefox, or see if they can upgrade their system to macOS 10.10 Yosemite.

Yosemite is available as a free update for Mavericks users, but it might not be an option for older Macs.

You can find a list of requirements for macOS 10.10 Yosemite here.
