Google’s Chrome for Android now trims your data usage by 70%

In a world of frustratingly shallow mobile data allowances, it’s tough to avoid slipping past your cap.

Google’s latest Chrome for Android update includes a new feature that helps slim down the data you need to browse the web.

The search engine giant has upgraded its Data Saver mode, bringing up to 70% reductions in the amount of data you use.

Now, Data Saver will work out when you’re browsing on a slow connection, and remove the majority of images on the page to reduce data consumption.

“Accessing mobile websites on a slow connection can be frustrating: it can eat up your data, and it takes work to keep track of your usage,” says Tal Oppenheimer, Product Manager and ‘Speedy Saver’. “With that in mind, we created Data Saver mode in Chrome, which reduces the amount of data used when you visit a webpage.”

“Now, we’re updating this mode to save even more date – up to 70%! – by removing most images when loading a page on a slow connection.”

The update will arrive first for Chrome users in India and Indonesia, with “additional countries in the coming months”.

You can find Data Saver mode in the settings of your Chrome app for Android devices.
