Google buys Fly Labs, bringing video editing to Google Photos
Google has been investing lots of time and energy in improving its Photos platform recently.
To that end, the search engine giant has announced acquisition of Fly Labs.
Fly Labs is the maker of four iOS apps – Clips, Fly, Tempo, and Crop – that make it easy to quickly edit footage shot on a smartphone.
The apps have seen impressive uptake, having been downloaded over 3 million times in the last 18 months.
What’s more, Fly Labs revealed that over 20 million videos have been created using its apps so far.
It’s not exactly clear how Google hopes to integrate Fly Labs’ software into Photos just yet, especially as editing currently isn’t featured. It’s likely that Fly Labs will help fill that gap.
“
It continues: “It’s a perfect match for what we built at Fly Labs, and we’re looking forward to folding our technology into Google Photos.”
The video app maker adds: “We’ll be pouring the same passion into Google Photos that we poured into Clips, Fly, Tempo, and Crop on the Fly.

Fly Labs also announced that the company’s entire suite of apps is now completely free, with zero in-app purchases.
However, these apps will only be available to download from the App Store for three more months.
After that, Fly Labs will no longer be submitting updates to the apps, and the apps will be removed from the store.
