Goodbye, conversion software! VLC is now available for Apple TV

VideoLAN, the makers of the popular VLC media player, has released a version of the app for the new Apple TV set-top box.

The software is famous for allowing users to play media files in a range of formats, when they’re incompatible with native software like Quicktime or iTunes.

The VLC app for iOS, which can be downloaded from the Apple TV App Store from today, offers access to all of the file formats you may be used to using on the desktop or iOS versions.

The software has been a godsend on desktop and mobile devices for years, saving users the hassle of converting video and audio files to friendly formats.

Now that ease of use has arrived on the Apple TV following a two month stint in beta, via Apple’s TestFlight service.

Like it’s desktop-based counterpart, it offers the ability to pause, play skip, select from different audio and subtitle options, while also browsing through files.

It’ll also be possible to alter playback speed, which VideoLAN tells VentureBeat is something no other Apple TV media player can achieve right now. Users will also be able to access content stored on a local FTP, DLNA or PLEX server network.

There’s also a Remote Playback feature, specific to the Apple TV, which allows users to cast media stored elsewhere to the Apple TV using the web-browser. Files can also be dragged and dropped into the browser interface and can be stored in the Apple TV cache.

Dropbox, OneDrive and Box integration are also coming soon, making it easy for users to access any media files they may have stored in the cloud.

If you’ve already downloaded VLC for your iOS device, you’ll find it in the Purchased section of the Apple TV App Store.
