Google Apologies After Gmail Outtage

World goes into melodrama mode.

I wasn’t even going to cover this story, but power of Twitter and sheer shock that a typically rock solid service momentarily spluttered has seemingly sent a tidal wave of overreaction across the Internet…

“Many of our users had difficulty accessing Gmail today,” confirmed Google on its Support Page in the last few hours. “The problem is now resolved and users have had access restored. We know how important Gmail is to our users, so we take issues like this very seriously, and we apologize for the inconvenience.”

Earlier the search giant admitted: “We’re aware of a problem with Gmail affecting a number of users. This problem occurred at approximately 1.30AM Pacific Time. We’re working hard to resolve this problem and will post updates as we have them. We apologize for any inconvenience that this has caused.”

Google has yet to elaborate on what exactly caused the fault, what proportion of users it affected (we’re hearing it was heavily UK centric) and if it has any new safeguards in place to stop this from happening in the future. From what we’ve heard so far, access via phones was seemingly robust and as a Google Apps user I’ve had a flawless service all day. Pattern or luck?

Of course one of the major challenges Google and all other ‘Cloud focused’ companies face is convincing people that the Cloud is more reliable than their desktops. I’m sure many are stupidly reconsidering this after today’s outage, but I suspect such doubters have had far more problems with their own PC reliability and data loss than this small blip in a five year old service which then rights itself.
