Surely way too little, far too late...?
As a little guy in the highly competitive console market if at first you don’t succeed, then you’re probably stuffed. Thus credit to Tiger Telematics for rallying a second time with a widescreen Gizmondo.
With a projected release of Q2 2006, the next generation of the – admittedly – flopped Gizmondo is going to have to go some to restore market credibility. It does its best mind you, with a 4in 480 x 272 screen, integrated wireless g, Bluetooth 2.0, a two megapixel camera and a promise of a minimum 25 per cent processor increase (500MHz then). Software will also be upgraded from Windows CE 4.2 to version 5.0 (as you would expect), and the multimedia aspect of device will be expanded to include voice support.
Ironically, whether releasing specs of the new machine this early will boost Gizmondo sales globally is hard to tell. After all, the original has not yet hit stores Stateside and Tiger Telematics has already made it (even?) less appealing.
You can’t help but feel a little sorry for little Tiger though, it obviously thought it had come up with a world beater and then along strode the PSP. Life can be cruel sometimes…
