Garmin Delays nüvifone Until Mid-2009

Disappointing, if not a great surprise.

Garmin’s nüvifone is so wildly ambitious this was always on the cards…

Ahead of its Q2 financial results, the GPS expert has announced its much anticipated handset will now not see a commercial release until mid-2009. The iPhone challenger had been expected to arrive first in Q3, then Q4.

“The nuvifone will not be available in fourth quarter as previously announced,” said the company in an official statement. “While we had hoped to have carrier launches in the fourth quarter, we have found that meeting some of the carrier specific requirements will take longer than anticipated. We remain pleased with carrier interest in the device and are working toward making necessary design changes to meet their requirements. We anticipate launching the product during the first half of 2009.”

Welcome to the horrible world of carrier approval Garmin. After all, it is the single biggest factor in hamstringing handset releases the world over as well as being the primary obstacle to firmware updates and patches on existing models.

Still, given the features of the nüvifone it may also be Garmin which has some tinkering still to do while that leaked RRP always sounded somewhat premature.

So Apple gets a free ride for even longer… can’t say I’m thrilled.
