The Samsung Galaxy S8 might be one of the finest phones around, but it’s not bulletproof – as a newly reported issue regarding disappearing text messages proves.
We gave Samsung’s early-2017 flagship a rare 10/10 score in our Galaxy S8 review, and it’s still one of the devices to beat, though it’s not immune to the odd glitch.
The latest problem to surface points to users being unable to receive certain texts on newer Galaxy devices, apparently because of a software hiccup.
Galaxy owners have taken to reddit to bemoan the issue, which is understood to be affecting third-party messaging apps and Samsung’s native SMS platform.
US-based Galaxy users seem to be the worst affected, with cell phone providers like Verizon, Sprint, and AT&T acknowledging the problem, though reports have also come in from the UK, Canada and Australia.
Affected devices include the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+, as well as the older Galaxy S7 Edge.
The semi-good news? Well, some users have reported getting decent mileage out of a simple fix – turning off the ‘Advanced Messaging’ feature located in Samsung’s text app.
However, others have said they’ve tried this fix to no avail.
More recently, reddit user Pooncutter shared another possible solution for the issue:
I have the Samsung S8+ on Sprint. I use Google’s Android Messages for my default texting app. The other day, Device Maintenance bugged me to put apps to sleep that were draining battery life. I complied and let it do it’s thing. Mean while that’s the moment the issue started. I checked the list of sleeping apps afterwards and noticed Android Messages was on that list. I removed the app from sleep and BAM back to normal. You may want to add your default texting app to the “unmonitored apps” section to prevent this from happening.
We’ve yet to experience the issue on our testing devices, so can’t independently verify either potential fix, but if you’ve been hit by the vanishing text plague, both seem worth a try.
