Gaikai Console-Style Gaming App Lands on Facebook

Cloud-based gaming service Gaikai has launched the beta version of an app for Facebook. The Californian company says the new app will “deliver high-end, console quality game experiences directly to consumers from inside the world’s leading social network.”

The beta will enable gamers to try out a selection of game demos for free, share their experience with friends and buy the game if they really like it.

Game publishers can benefit by potentially reaching hundreds of millions of new players in North America and Europe. The first games available in the Beta from launch include Magicka, Sniper: Ghost Warrior,
The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, Farming Simulator 2011 and Orcs Must Die!

Also available in the Facebook app are Saints Row: The Third and Dead Rising 2: Off the Record, but only in the US at present.

Gaikai works on any broadband-connected computer using Windows, Mac OS
or Linux and in all main browsers including Internet Explorer, Chrome,
Firefox and Safari.

According to David Perry, CEO of Gaikai: “People don’t want to leave Facebook to play games – Zynga’s phenomenal success is proof of that. Cloud gaming means that the game doesn’t need to be downloaded and run on your computer, it literally means the game runs out on the internet, in the cloud, with the experience being streamed to the players. Most videogame publishers are now seeking to grow their digital customer base and, unlike movie and music services like Netflix and Spotify, Gaikai gives the game publishers relationships with the customers.”
