Freeloader: Power All Your Gadgets Using The Sun

Never carry another mains plug again.

The idea of additional portable power has always appealed. In fact ReCharge4 came out with a pretty compelling solution towards the end of last year, but could this be the ultimate method?

Developed by Solar Technology, the ‘FreeLoader’ uses that great constant ”the sun” (unless you live in Scotland) to provide additional juice to virtually any gadget be it an iPod, digital camera, mobile phone, PSP, sat nav, etc – though laptops are off the menu.

For example, on one full charge Solar claims the FreeLoader will power an iPod for 18 hours, a mobile phone for 44 hours, a PSP for 2.5 hours and a PDA for 22 hours. The FreeLoader itself takes five hours to charge using its solar cells (which also respond to indirect sunlight and artificial light) and three hours if plugged into a USB port. It can charge devices and be charged simultaneously and holds a full charge for up to three months.

In terms of portability the Freeloader itself measures 12.3 x 6.2 x 1.7cm and weighs just 185g making it little more bulky than your average smart phone. It also folds to conserve space.

Unlike the ReCharge4, the Freeloader ships will a full selection of 11 adaptors to cover the following

*LG Chocolate series phones

*Motorola V66 series and current V3 series phones

* All Nokia current and N series phones

*Samsung A288 and current D800 series phones

* Sony Ericsson T28 and current K750 series phones

*4mm straight jack for Sony PSP, TomTom sat nav, digital cameras, PDAs and two-way radios

*Mini USB for Blackberry Smart phones, Nintendo DS, Bluetooth headsets etc

*USB 2.0 female socket for iPod, iPod Shuffle, MP3 players, smartphones, PDAs, GPS and more

So a pretty spanking collection which Solar Technology says it will continue to expand. Final plus points on this device: it is available now and with an RRP of just £29.99 it should make sun worshippers out of us all.
