Free WiFi For T-Mobile Web n Walk Customers

If you signed up after 1 January...

As a T-Mobile customer I have my issues with its network coverage, but there’s no denying the telco’s Web n Walk packages make it the king of mobile broadband – and now maybe WiFi too…

Marking an industry first, the German giant is merging its WiFi and high speed 3G (HSDPA) offerings for customers on its Web n’Walk Plus and Web n’ Walk Max data plans meaning as of today there will be free, unlimited access to its 39,000 WiFi hotspots across the globe built into its monthly package at no extra charge.

“We’re the only network to include unlimited use of our own HotSpots,” said Richard Warmsley, T-Mobile’s Head of Internet on the Move. “We recognise that it’s a quick reliable connection that matters most, not the technology you use to get online. We also know that customers don’t get bits and bytes so we focus on simple fixed price plans that never have any extra charges, no matter how much surfing you need.”

Now sadly, despite the enthusiasm with which I greet this progressive announcement, there are a few noticeable caveats. The first is that the deal only applies to new Plus and Max customers who joined the service from 1 January 2008. This is particularly hard on those who just hopped on one of the cut price two year contracts T-Mobile has been advertising since November/December time.

Secondly, the deal also isn’t available to mobile phone owners using the handset orientated Web n’ Walk package and given that customers on these tariffs have web capable models, free WiFi would have been a particular boon – especially when travelling abroad.

Still, it’s hard to be angry at a telco which is offering something for nothing and something which no other network does (yet). So for those of you not excluded from this offer you would do well to flash the cash faster than you can say ‘MasterCard’…

”’Update:”’ Hugo, our resident News Writer and Robin to my Batman, has gotten one up on me today with a very apt point: O2 offers free Cloud wireless access with its iPhone contracts. D’oh! And I would’ve gotten away with it too if it wasn’t for that pesky kid…
