Free Wi-Fi comes to the terraces ahead of the new football season

Ahead of this weekend’s start to the new football season, Championship side Brighton and Hove Albion have confirmed they are to bring free Wi-Fi to the terraces.

With visits to stadiums, arenas and entertainment venues usually marred by poor or non-existent Wi-Fi and cellular access, Brighton have partnered with Sky’s nationwide Wi-Fi service, The Cloud, to ensure their Amex Community Stadium has free internet access for all in attendance.

Letting footy fans keep track of scores in other games, keep friends informed of the action or simply berate the referee’s performance on social media, the Wi-Fi access will be free to use, with targeted ads helping subsidise its availability.

“Our fans want to get online– everything from catching up on scores to uploading videos from the stands. The ability to get online has become a big part of match day,” Paul Barber, CEO at Brighton and Hove Albion Football Club said.

He added: “For us, mobile is a great way of bringing the fans closer to the action and there’s an opportunity to expand on that in the future with competitions, games or other interactive tools. Having fast, free internet across the ground is key to engaging with fans.”

Vince Russell, MD at Sky’s public Wi-Fi service The Cloud, added: “We know that football fans love to get online when they are in or near the stadium – to get the latest sports updates or share their own pictures and comment.

“Launching Sky’s public Wi-Fi service The Cloud at Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club is another great example of Sky’s ability to use the latest technology and innovation to give sports fans an even better experience.”

The free Wi-Fi access will be available at the Amex Community Stadium in time for Albion’s opening game of the season against Sheffield Wednesday this Saturday, August 9.
