Free EE Power Bars face stock shortage after 1m orders

EE’s Power Bars have proved a staggering success, leaving some stores with empty stock rooms.

The network provider began giving away the portable battery packs for free last week, in hopes of preventing smartphone customers from running out of juice.

What’s more, the company vowed that it would replace empty bars with full ones at any EE store in the country.

To qualify for the deal, EE customers were required to text ‘POWER’ to 365 to receive a promo code, which could be traded for a Power Bar unit in store.

Unfortunately, the Power Bars proved so popular that EE has announced that it’s ‘taking a power pause’.

The company said it received one million Power Bar requests in just four days after the April 16 launch.

It also had five times more day one requests than the most popular smartphone launch in the UK, with store visits up 300 per cent.

This rampant success means EE has had to step back from doling out the battery packs, however.

“While we fulfil the requests we’ve already taken, we’re taking a short ‘power pause’ to replenish stock,” wrote an EE Community Team admin.

“More Power Bars are on their way for our second release at the end of June. If customers text in now, they will be advised to text back from 8am on June 24 – there will be no charge for these texts if no code is received.”

The company is currently moving stock around to its busiest stores to meet the demand of the first million requests.

EE says your local store ‘should have a Power Bar available this week’ if you already have a code.
