First Sky High Def Channels Emerge

Not the full shebang, but if you like the beautiful game you're going to be pleased.

Just three weeks back Sky gave us a sneak peak of its new High Definition Digibox and passed us over some exclusive details, now news has arrived of the first channels to take advantage of it.

From launch (a mystical day as yet unannounced), subscribers with the right kit (aforementioned digibox, compatible TV, etc) will be able to receive one Sky Sports channel, two Sky Movies channels, Sky One, a dedicated HD Sky Box Office channel and…. um, Artsworld.

The fact that not all broadcasts will be high definition from the off is probably disappointing to many, but a little impractical to synchronise all in one go. More importantly, at least in the eyes of the Murdockian Empire, is that until owners of HD equipment increase it’s not financially profitable to make the move in a single jump.

That said, footy fans will be chuffed to bits to learn that all Premiership matches will get the HD treatment and the bigger rugby and cricket matches will be featured too. (I’ll save my football/rugby/cricket rant for another time as it’ll get ugly and I’ve already used my week’s allowance on the PANTS Ministry of Sound MP3 player).

As for movies, titles to get the HD treatment from the beginning include Spider Man 2, The Day After Tomorrow and the mouth watering House of the Flying Daggers, while Box Office customers get ten movies to choose from each week. Sky One will be… err a High Def broadcast of Sky One and Artsworld will be whatever Artsworld is? (I should know this being a double lit grad. I’ll go watch it tonight out of shame…maybe).

Pre-registration for Sky’s HD service begins on Friday and those of you lucky enough to be in a position to sign up will find the details soon posted here. In the meantime, the rest of us will make snide remarks about you having too much money for your own good, before taking up permanent lodgings in your living rooms.
