Firefox turns 40 and adds Windows 10 support

Mozilla loves to hammer out new versions of its Firefox browser, most come and go with little to get excited about. Today’s update is different.

First of all, it’s the 40th version of Firefox for desktop and Android devices. And second, it’s the first to support the new Windows 10 operating system.

The new browser offers a scaled back user interface in keeping with Microsoft’s design language. Firefox 40 also provides more space for viewing web pages, as well as larger icons to make it easier to use on touchscreen devices.

The address bar brings larger fonts, while users will be able to access a custom Windows 10 theme.

“You can now download or update to the latest Firefox to see a fresh new look in Windows 10,” the company wrote on Tuesday.

We’ve made thoughtful tweaks to the interface to give Firefox a streamlined feel. You’ll also notice bigger, bolder design elements, as well as more space for viewing the web. We had a lot of fun building this version of Firefox, and we hope you’ll enjoy the new look.”

Of course, Microsoft will be hoping that Windows 10 users instead choose to give its new built-in Edge browser a whirl.

Elsewhere, there’s also a fresh commitment to malware protection in Firefox 40.

The browser will issue users with a warning if they visit a page known to contain deceptive software that can “make undesirable changes to your computer”.
