Fennec Launching In Early February

HTC Touch Pro owners will be the lucky beneficiaries.

For many Firefox is the defacto computer web browser but could it attain the same high praise in the mobile space too…

Following what seems an age (actually it IS an age – October 2007 in fact) since Mozilla confirmed development on a Firefox mobile web browser the first publicly available handset version could be out as early as next week.

In a statement on its wiki, the company confirmed: “We are targeting a Milestone release for the first week of February, targeting the HTC touch pro.” Why the Touch Pro? I suspect because it has fairly quick hardware inside, runs the widely available Windows Mobile and has a physical keyboard – suggesting a virtual keyboard compatible version may not be ready yet (though I’m sure the identical but keyboard-less Touch could be used to give it a spin to know for sure).

Of course for the curious, a desktop version of Fennec is available for your messing-about-with and it does seem highly promising with an intuitive interface, tab support and a clever use of screen real estate. Fingers crossed for more on this soon…
