Fallout 76 won’t have crossplay support at launch and here’s why

Bethesda has hinted that Fallout 76 will not, in its current state, launch with cross-play support, even though the company would “love” to see it happen.

Coming to PS4, Xbox One and PC on November 14, the upcoming post-apocalyptic RPG takes the beloved series into the realm of multiplayer for the first time.

Sadly, it seems that crossplay won’t be possible at launch, at least according to a recent interview with Game Director Todd Howard.

Speaking to Gamestar.de, Howard said, “we would love to do that, but right now that’s not possible.” He goes on to add that “Sony isn’t being as helpful as we want them to be.”

Bethesda clearly isn’t mincing words regarding its thoughts on Sony’s position in the crossplay conundrum, an issue which has dominated headlines as of late.

Fortnite, the biggest game in the world right now, does not currently support crossplay on PS4, whereas Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and all other platforms welcome the feature.

“We’re hearing [our players]. We’re looking at a lot of the possibilities. You can imagine that the circumstances around that affect a lot more than just one game,” Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO and president Shawn Layden recently told Eurogamer.

“I’m confident we’ll get to a solution which will be understood and accepted by our gaming community, while at the same time supporting our business.”

While it can be played as a solo effort, Fallout 76 is entirely online with players occupying a shared world located in West Virginia. So, a large pool of players can only benefit the experience.

It appears Sony has softened its stance on crossplay in recent months, although we still have a long way to go until we see such features implemented across all platforms.
