Facebook to offer GIF-like looping videos as profile pics

Facebook is giving profile photos a revamp by allowing users to record seven-second video clips that will play in a loop.

The GIF-like clips will enable members to replace the static photo, and is one of three changes the company is planning for profiles within its mobile apps.

The social network is testing the feature on a limited number of iPhone users in the UK and California from today, it announced.

“Soon, you’ll be able to film a short, looping video clip that will play for anyone who visits your profile,” the firm wrote on its Newsroom blog.

Profile videos will let show a part of yourself you couldn’t before, and add a new dimension to your profile.”

Alongside the looping videos, Facebook is also planning to give mobile users more flexibility when it comes to regular profile pics.

Users will be able to set a temporary pic, which will revert back to the regular image after a certain period of time.

“Want to support your team in the week leading up to the big game, commemorate a special milestone like a birthday or vacation or show off a great #tbt picture? Now you can create a temporary profile picture specifically for those moments and events,” the company added.

“It can be a visual status update to let your friends know what’s going on in your life today, or it can be your statement of solidarity for a cause you feel strongly about.”

Finally, Facebook is introducing improved profile controls, making it easier for users to change information visible to visitors.
