Facebook’s live video map is impressive but creepy

Facebook launched its live video streaming functionality earlier this year, allowing any Facebook user to broadcast footage of themselves.

Now, Zuck and co. have rolled out a new interactive video map, which shows all the available live streams at any given time around the world.

So now, not only can you watch pixelated footage of bored teenagers muttering in their bedrooms, you can also find out exactly where in the world that bedroom is.

Live streams are represented by blue dots, and those with the largest audience (at least a few hundred) will pulse to let you know just how popular they are.

Hovering over these popular streams will reveal the locations of all those who’ve tuned in around the world, adding to the creep-factor.

You can also hover over any dot to get a video preview. Don’t expect too much however – our first go with the map revealed the most popular stream in the UK to be nothing more than shaky footage of a cow in a field.

Alongside the map, a side panel will give you recommendations based on the most-watched videos at the time.

The map has been around for some time but saw a global launch on May 18 and can be found under the Apps in the left navigation bar on your Facebook timeline.

It’s certainly a novel way to discover live video feeds, if a little unsettling. Give it a try and let us know what you think in the comments.
