Facebook Messenger’s new AR games are no laughing matter

Facebook has just launched two new augmented reality interactive games on the Facebook Messenger app.

Facebook Messenger has grown massively in popularity over the last two years. Aside from being dead easy to use this is mainly down to the introduction of a suite of fun filters. There’s now a whole host of them ranging from the cute to the creepy. Turning into a Werewolf is a favourite and creeps out my mum no end.

The popularity of the filters has led to Facebook introducing games, just hit the star icon when on a Messenger video call to access them.

The first two games are called “Don’t Smile” and “Asteroids Attack”.

Don’t Smile is all about keeping it together, no matter what your mates are up to. The first one to break into a smile loses, and the AR filter will morph the losers mouth into a massive goofy grin.

Asteroid Attack places a spaceship precariously on your nose. You need to move your head to avoid falling asteroids and try to unlock the asteroid blaster so you can shoot them to smithereens.

Unlike the traditional Facebook games we’ve loved and loathed in equal measure (You have a Farmville request nightmares persist) these games are short and snappy and designed with multiple players in mind – up to six at the moment.

There are more games made by Facebook’s in-house team coming soon like “Kitten Kraze” and “Beach Bump” and just like filters games will come and go, Facebook told Trusted Reviews. This is likely to keep the experience fresh, but also to bring seasonal games for the likes of Halloween or the World Cup.

Facebook Messenger’s AR games will be available today, but make sure you have the latest version of the iOS or Android app installed. Facebook tells us that the experience will be just as good whether you’re on an iPhone X or a Moto G6.
