Facebook has finally explained quite why it thought spending $1billion on Instagram was a good idea: it was making an Instagram of its own and didn’t want to come up second best.
The social networking company has launched a new camera app that like Instagram focusses on providing fun extras like filters to really enhance your mobile photo taking and sharing experience. By taking a direct approach the app also aims to make photo taking and sharing quicker and easier than using the Facebook app itself. Specifically, you can tag friends and locations, add descriptions and apply one of the 14 filters.
Of course, Facebook isn’t publicily saying this is a direct rival to Instagram but a spokesman did say that “we’re committed to building and growing Instagram independently, so I anticipate some healthy competition.”
Currently the app is only available for iOS in English-speaking countries but will be rolled out worldwide over the next few weeks. Meanwhile other phone platforms will have to wait a little while longer, with Facebook yet to commit.
