Facebook Home hits 500,000 downloads

Facebook Home has been downloaded 500,000 times since its launch on April 12.

The figure has emerged on the Android app’s own Google Play Store listing, as the ‘Installs’ section has flipped to ‘500,000 – 1,000,000.’

These aren’t particularly stellar numbers, with the likes of the much-anticipated Instagram app hitting one million downloads in just a day when it launched on Android just over a year ago, but Facebook Home is a slightly unusual case.

For one thing, it isn’t really a stand-alone app at all. It’s a launcher for an existing service, transforming your normal Android home screen into a Facebook-focused one.

Another reason Facebook Home hasn’t exactly burst onto the best sellers list is its limited availability. At present, it’s only available for a handful of pretty high-end smartphones.

While this list includes the likes of the popular Samsung Galaxy S3 and the Samsung Galaxy Note II – as well as a couple of HTC devices – that still leaves the majority of Android smartphone owners out in the cold.

Expect the overall downloads figure for Facebook Home to rise dramatically as more Android handsets are supported. With over a billion Facebook users worldwide – and with Android set to hit a billion users itself later this year –  there’s clearly plenty of potential.

Facebook Home allows you to post Facebook updates quickly and easily without even having to unlock your Android phone’s screen. It also allows you to partake in Facebook chats without interrupting or exiting the app you’re using at the time.

Have you downloaded Facebook Home? If so, are you glad you did? Let us know in the comments section below.
