Facebook follows WhatsApp in ditching BlackBerry

Facebook is dropping support for BlackBerry’s BB10 platform.

Do you have a BlackBerry device running BB10? Then you won’t be able to use Facebook on it for too much longer.

Over on a recent BlackBerry blog post, the company revealed that “Recently, Facebook made the decision to discontinue support of their essential APIs for BlackBerry.”

BlackBerry says that it is “extremely disappointed” in this decision, and that it “fought back” to try and change the company’s mind. It has even tried to orchestrate a Twitter campaign against the move.

Facebook’s dropping of the BlackBerry platform isn’t particularly surprising. As the aforementioned blog post makes reference to, the decision follows a similar one from WhatsApp, which is owned by Facebook.

In its own blog post on the matter, WhatsApp explained that “While these mobile devices have been an important part of our story, they don’t offer the kind of capabilities we need to expand our app’s features in the future.”

It also points out that these days, around 99.5 percent of all smart devices run of software from Apple, Google, or Microsoft.

Of course, it should be pointed out that BlackBerry itself seems to be seriously mulling over ditching its own BB10 platform. The BlackBerry Priv has been one of its best – and best-selling – devices of recent times, and it runs on a modified version of Android.
