Fable Legends will be free to play, confirms Microsoft

Microsoft has confirmed Fable Legends will be free to play on both Windows 10 and Xbox One.

Fable Legends, the four vs one cross-platform RPG from Lionhead Studios, will be the developer’s first ever free-to-play game.

The game, due to be released at an unknown date later this year, marks a huge difference from the studio’s previous titles in terms of gameplay and payment model.

“Since starting development on Fable Legends, we’ve had two clear goals in mind. First and foremost, we’re aiming to create an amazing, fun gaming experience for our players,” explained Lionhead Studios in a statement.

“Our second goal is to ensure the game we’re working to create is available to as many players as possible. The first step to make that happen came when we announced this year that Fable Legends will be cross-playable on both Xbox one and Windows 10 PC. Today we’re announcing the next huge piece of news that’ll help us reach this goal.”

“Fable Legends will be free to play.”

You’ll be able to play Fable Legends from start to finish without actually having to spend any real-world money, with all storyline packs and quests offered for free. Anything that you need to affect the gameplay will be earned by playing the game.

At launch Fable Legends will offer you four different heroes to play for free. After a fortnight, the original four heroes will be replaced with a new foursome. This will continue for as long as Microsoft will support the game.

Any progress you make with a particular hero will be saved, meaning you can pick up where you left off next time they come around on a rotation.

If you want to keep a certain hero, you can unlock them using the in-game currency, silver, or with real-world currency aka gold.

There’s also an option to play as the villain. This is a top-down camera view and offers you more of an RTS experience.

As the villain you play through the storyline, just as the heroes do, with each quest offering its own native creatures that you can use. Again, if you want to keep a certain creature you can buy it with silver or gold.

Albion, the world of Fable Legends, is littered with treasure and loot that is yours to keep. You can use this to customise your heroes, but the finest and rarest can only be obtained using gold purchased with real-world currency.

Lionhead Studios plans to add new heroes, creatures, quests and villains to Fable Legends each season. As for the story, you’re looking at a Telltale Games-style episodic release here.

You can sign up for the Fable Legends multiplayer beta on Xbox One and PC via the official website.
