Evesham Puts Out Affordable 1.2Kg Laptop

Built in optical drive and massive battery life too.

It’s about time the ultraportable category of laptops became a lot cheaper. After all, they may have specially miniaturised components with low power draw but they also have far lower performance specs and storage capacities than your average machine. Thankfully Evesham agrees with me.

The UK based system builder has come up with the ‘Lightbook’, a 283 x 238 x 35mm, 1.2Kg notebook that still manages to pack in an optical drive and tonnes of features for a bargain price.

A 12.1in XGA display starts things off and it is backed up by the choice of either an Intel Core Solo ULV or Celeron M ULV processor, 512MB of DDR 533 RAM, 60GB HDD, dual layer DVD rewriter, wireless b/g, a 4-In-1 card reader, 10/100Mbit Ethernet and even a fingerprint reader. The only obvious downside is that the graphics are Intel’s integrated GMA 950 so gaming is a definite no-no.

Perhaps most impressive however is Evesham’s claims of the Lightbook’s five hour battery life with an optional extended battery said to double this to a whopping 10 hours. So this truly is mobile computing at its best.

Furthermore while the extended battery may be optional, the rest of this spec will set you back just £999 including VAT (it can also be customised – I’d add have a gig of RAM) and comes with a three year warranty.

Shucks, it’s making me come over all emotional and patriotic.
