Essential Phone PH-2 will come with an improved camera

Californian smartphone startup Essential is aware that the rear-facing camera on the Essential Phone PH-1 missed the mark, and so it’s announced that it is committed to making sure the shooter on its next flagship – rumoured to be called the Essential Phone PH-2 – is up to scratch.

“One thing that we got hit hard with was the quality of our camera, and we’re really looking forward to improving that with our next-gen, making sure that we’re listening to our customers and their pain points… We’re going to make it better for you,” Lindia Jiang, Head of Industrial Design at Essential, told Business Insider.

Beyond the camera, Jiang didn’t reveal much about what other changes Essential is making to the second-generation Essential Phone, reports Business Insider, although she did note that it’s attempting to develop a coating that will make the device – the black variant in particular – less slippery and prone to fingerprints.

The Essential Phone PH-1 wasn’t a bad handset per se, especially when you consider that it was the first smartphone designed and manufactured by the Californian startup, but at the same time it also wasn’t the big hit Essential thought it would be – the result of an overly-optimistic price tag and a sub-par camera.

If Essential is able to offer high-end hardware at a competitive price (think: OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T), there’s a chance it could win back some customers who were left with a sour taste in their mouth after picking up the Essential Phone PH-1. The only way it’s going to do that, however, is by undercutting its competitors.
