Computex 2009: Bat-wing fans, Magma, and improved aerodynamics... and we all thought power supplies were boring.
Okay so we probably couldn’t go so far as to ever say the announcement of a new power supply is exciting but Enermax’s latest units certainly come closer than most. The new 80Plus Gold range incorporates a whole host of new features and design tweaks that make it more than just more powerful or efficient than the competition, though it’s both these things as well.
Most obvious is the new bat-wing Magma fan which uses a tweaked fin shape that, you’ll never guess, is reminiscent of a bat’s wing. This apparently improves airflow and reduces turbulence, making for a quieter yet more powerful fan. The blades are also removable to allow for easy cleaning and use a magnetic bearing to further reduce friction and increase longevity.
Next, the shape of the fan grill holes has been changed, though this did seem to be a mostly aesthetic addition. However, the way the fan grill is incorporated into the surround and the way it dips around the edges of the fan apparently helps reduce turbulence further, again keeping noise down.
Add in the fact this is an 80Plus Gold certified supply that means it will deliver 87 – 92% efficiency at 20 – 100 percent load and you have a seriously tempting proposition. Unfortunately we couldn’t get a price but expect it to be high. They’ll be available imminently in ratings of 450W, 550W, and 650W and in both modular and hard-wrired versions.
