EE to rival GoPro with first 4G connected action cam

EE is stepping out from its network provider roots, bringing the fight to GoPro with the world’s first 4G connected action camera.

Dubbed the 4GEE Action Cam, the compact, ruggedized camera will come bundled with a companion smartwatch which acts as a digital viewfinder for easier video framing.

Capable of capturing 1080p, Full HD video content at up to 60 frames-per-second, the camera will allow users to stream content live over a 4G network – a first for the action cam industry.

Like its market-leading rivals, the 4GEE Action Cam features a sturdy plastic case, waterproof to 60 metres.

The unit’s party piece, however, is its ability to live stream video content over EE’s 4G network.

Content can be streamed at 720p, HD, resolution, with Skeegle to be the streaming partner at launch.

“We think we are entering a new phase of ubiquitous connectivity,” EE CEO, Olaf Swantee said in unveiling the device.

He added: “We think that by 2017 we will sell more connected devices than smartphones. These will be devices created by partners, but sometimes ourselves.

“We think we can be the first network to move beyond smartphones into connected devices. We want everyone to be connected.”

Capable of capturing stills as well as video content, the 4GEE Action Cam, which can offer up to 64GB of internal storage via microSD expansion, offers 13-megapixel imaging abilites.

Set to benefit from iOS and Android companion apps for smartphone syncing, the camera will be available for purchase starting from June 16.
