EE confirms double speed 4G for UK “within weeks”

EE has confirmed that it will be bringing double-speed 4G to ten UK cities “within weeks”.

Ten UK cities will be receiving the double-speed 4G connection within the weeks, with headline speeds up to 80Mbps and average speeds between 24-30Mbps for 4G customers.

Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, London, Manchester and Sheffield will all soon have access to double-speed 4G for faster mobile broadband connections.

“It’s great to hear that EE is launching double-speed 4G,” said Tom Shorten, Customer and Strategy Director at Phones 4u.  We believe the industry needs to work harder to demonstrate the tangible benefits of 4G to customers beyond cost and speed to focus on the enhanced experience it can offer.”

“The retail environment is vital for this and at Phones 4u we’re working on building this into our sales process so customers have the opportunity to ask questions and see for themselves, before they buy, what a 3G or 4G experience will be like.”

EE simultaneously announced it has accumulated over half a million 4GEE customers in the seven months since it launched, making it the fastest 4G customer take up in Europe.

“By the end of June, we will have rolled out 4G across 55 per cent of the population, and will continue to switch on new towns and cities,” said Olaf Swantee, CEO at EE.

The UK network provider will begin to offer 4G connections across major commuter routes, as well as adding hotspots to shopping centres and airports.

Shared 4GEE plans will also be introduced this summer, allowing customers to share their data plans across their smartphones and tablets or with their family and friends.

Customers will also be able to access 4G mobile broadband on their tablets and laptops on a PAYG basis via the new Pay As You Go Mobile Broadband tariffs.

“We recognise that with 4G, customers connect to the things they care about more frequently, across more devices,” added Swantee. “Our Shared 4GEE plans and Pay As You Go 4GEE Mobile Broadband will offer our customers more ways to do this.”
